Brian Eno is credited with the claim that everyone who originally bought a Velvet Underground album subsequently formed a band. It's no less valid to suggest that many of those involved in electronic music might not have been but for No Pussyfooting and Evening Star.

Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, RDI ( born 15 May 1948 and originally christened Brian Peter George Eno) is an English musician, composer, record producer, singer, writer, and visual artist. He is best known for his pioneering work in ambient and electronic music as well as his influential contributions to rock, worldbeat, chance, and generative music styles. A self-described 'non-musician,' Eno has advocated a methodology of 'theory over practice' throughout his career, and has helped to introduce a variety of unique recording techniques and conceptual approaches into contemporary music. He has been described as one of popular music's most influential and innovative figures. Born in Suffolk, Eno studied painting and experimental music at art school in the late 1960s before joining glam rock group Roxy Music as synthesizer player in 1971. After recording two albums with the band, he departed in 1973 to record a number of solo albums, ultimately helping to develop ambient music with works such as Another Green World (1975), Discreet Music (1975), and Music for Airports (1978). During this decade, Eno would also begin a parallel career as an influential producer, which included work on albums by Talking Heads and Devo, the no wave compilation No New York (1978), and works by avant-garde artists such as John Cale, Jon Hassell, and Harold Budd, among others. He also took part in frequent collaborations, among them two mid-70s albums with guitarist Robert Fripp, singer David Bowie’s late-70s “Berlin Trilogy”, and the David Byrne collaboration My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (1981). In subsequent decades, Eno continued to record solo albums, collaborate, and produce for other artists, including U2, Coldplay, Laurie Anderson, James, Grace Jones, Slowdive, and James Blake. Dating back to his time as a student, he has also pursued a variety of multimedia projects in parallel with his music career, including sound installations and his mid-70s co-development of Oblique Strategies, a deck of cards featuring cryptic aphorisms intended to break creative blocks and encourage lateral thinking. He continues to release music, produce, and write, and maintains a regular column in Prospect Magazine.

This early-'80s cassette combines Robert Fripp and Brian Eno's No Pussyfooting (1973) and its follow-up, Evening Star (1975), onto a double-play program. Both artists were already prominent in their own right and their partnership provided an outlet that (at least stylistically speaking) was at once fairly far removed from their previous musical canons, yet an undeniable extension of them. The end results reflected the performers' unfettered capacity for inventiveness and creativity; the execution of these ambient instrumentals was essentially the same. The methodology -- which was soon given the appellation of 'Frippertronics' -- consisted of open-reel tape machines that would bounce audio between them, while simultaneously allowing the musicians to layer and otherwise manipulate the input in real time. As inspiration would dictate, Fripp then added lead guitar parts over the mood-inducing sonic stratum. No Pussyfooting is indeed an apt designation, encompassing -- as the titles insinuate -- the beautiful ('The Heavenly Music Corporation') as well as the beastly ('Swastika Girls') aspects of the Eno/Fripp alliance. On the former, listeners are drawn into the sounds as they are intricately unraveled before the tranquility is broken by decreasingly stable moods and increasingly ominous contributions from Fripp. The latter, while no less ethereal, is undeniably colder and somewhat discordant by contrast. After putting King Crimson to bed for the remainder of the 1970s, Fripp reconvened with Eno for Evening Star. While the effort certainly built upon their earlier collaborations, they unveil richer and overall deeper penetrating hues. With the exception of 'Wind on Wind' -- which is an excerpt from Eno's 30-plus-minute solo composition 'Discreet Music' -- the remnants continue with layered tone probes and aural explorations. The opening 'Wind on Water' develops into the track 'Evening Star,' with Fripp's thoughtful fretwork providing a unifying melody. Albeit brief -- running just shy of three minutes -- 'Evensong's memorable refrain would be revived by Fripp in his own Soundscapes and Churchscapes. An example of its maturity can be heard on 2008's At the End of Time: Churchscapes -- Live in England & Estonia, 2006. At nearly half an hour, 'An Index of Metals' develops languidly, taking atmospheric detours into dark and foreboding spaces. As the overall fidelity inherent in the typical prerecorded retail cassette medium leaves a great deal to be desired -- audiophile or not -- the late-'80s remastered Definitive Editions of No Pussyfooting and Evening Star are recommended for inclined parties.
